If you are new to firearms there are a few very important rules and principles you need to know. Here at Buckeye Shooting Center, we want to help guide you through the clutter and make sure you are safe, informed, and understand the basics of firearm safety and operation.
Every time, everywhere: Treat every gun as if it’s loaded; never point the muzzle at anything you’re not willing to damage; keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you’ve decided to shoot; be sure of your target and what’s in front, around, and beyond it. Say them out loud, practice them dry (unloaded), and make them habit—these rules stack together to prevent accidents and build confidence.
Think of safe storage as preventing unauthorized access—unloaded, locked, and out of sight—and staging as securing a defensive firearm so it’s quickly accessible only to you. The goal in both is the same: protect kids, visitors, and curious hands while keeping you prepared.
This USCCA video gives a simple walk-through of a modern semiauto handgun—what the frame/grip, slide, barrel, sights, magazine, and basic controls are—and shows how they work together during the firing cycle (load, fire, eject, feed, lock open when empty). It keeps the focus on safe handling and clear visuals so you can recognize each part and understand the big picture without getting into technical deep-dives.
A quality firearms class turns curiosity into competence and confidence. You’ll learn the essentials—safe handling, storage, and judgment—then build correct habits with hands-on coaching so you don’t ingrain mistakes. Training also gives you a clear path for progress (what to practice, how to measure it) and context for the legal and ethical responsibilities that come with gun ownership. In short: a class saves you time, raises your safety margin, and makes every future range trip more productive—At BSC, we’ll meet you where you are and give you a clear path to keep improving.
“What made the difference was everything under one roof: spotless, safety-first lanes, a huge rental fleet to try before buying, a pro shop that fitted my pistol and optic, and a gunsmith who tuned it right. The membership perks (free range time every open hour, priority access, pre-booking, and discounts on classes and ammo) kept me on the line, learning fast. Today I’m running Practical Pistol and 2-Gun matches, planning stages, making clean reloads, and chasing personal bests. I walked in a complete beginner; BSC turned me into a confident, competent shooter—and the community keeps pushing me to get better.”
